The "35 Years of Caring – An Affair to Remember" Gala Event

By: Karen Jupiter

March 14 was our 35th Anniversary Gala. And, that night was a great demonstration for how things have been going for us in terms of fundraising.  It didn't raise as much as last year, but it came very close.  Our gala committee (made up of board members, volunteers and staff) stepped up to the plate and made more contacts than ever, trying to generate corporate support, sell individual tickets and garner great auction items.  To speak with any of the committee, you quickly learn that it is a tough climate out there.  Some of our supporters gave less or could not give, most maintained their level of support from previous years and a blessed few stepped up their giving to help support our mission.  As difficult as it may seem for you and me right now, people clearly understand that our clients are struggling even more.

And so, we not only celebrated 35 years of service to our community, we nearly matched our revenue raised last year, despite having fewer people attend the event.  For me, it was a clear endorsement of our work.  I am humbled to see so many give generously in this climate.  It is truly a testament to their belief in our mission and its power.

If you know any of our corporate sponsors, thank them when you patronize their businesses.  Tell them you saw their name as a sponsor and share their interest in our work.  They are: Capital One, Good Shepherd Housing Board – Past and Present, Quadel Consulting Corporation, US Airways, AT&T, Verizon, Potomac Advocates, Cox Communications, Sheehy Auto Stores, Oliff & Berridge, PLC, Phil and Peg Soucy, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Wal-Mart, Alexandria Lighting & Supply Inc., David and Gloria Curry, Mt.
